About Students for Autoimmune Funding and Education (SAFE)

The SAFE Club was founded by a group of Centre students in Fall of 2018 with the mission to raise awareness, fund research, educate the campus and Danville community & act as a support system for anyone dealing with an autoimmune disease. In order to promote our mission, the SAFE Club has committed one large scale fundraising event per semester, along with one small scale awareness or funding event per month. Proceeds go to organizations with similar missions like the AARDA (American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association).

Autoimmune diseases effect every 1/5 people, and roughly 50 million Americans. There are more than 100 different autoimmune diseases including lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and type 1 diabetes. The AARDA describes an autoimmune disease as the development of a "person’s immune system mistakenly identifies healthy cells as foreign cells and attacks them."
