Centre students have a remarkable record of winning the world’s most prestigious post-baccalaureate (Knight-Hennesy, Rhodes, Fulbright) and undergraduate (Goldwater, Truman) scholarships.

Below are links to brief descriptions of some of the top awards for students wishing to apply. Interested students should contact Dr.Robert Schalkoff, director of the Office of Fellowships, at robert.schalkoff@centre.edu.

The fellowships and scholarships listed here and above are by no means exhaustive, rather they are opportunities for which the Office of Fellowships provides strategic advising. There are many other fellowships and scholarships. If you are interested in one that is not listed or are not seeing one that "fits" you, please contact Dr. Schalkoff for advice and resources available to you for advising. 

NOTE: Most scholarship applications are due early in the fall term. Gates, Rhodes, Marshall, and Mitchell campus interviews are held in the spring of the junior year.

Fulbright 

Fulbright Open Study/Research Award 

The Fulbright US Student Program offers Open Study/Research Awards to graduating seniors. These students are responsible for designing their own projects and work with advisors at international institutions. The Fulbright Program offers grants in the Arts, Business, Journalism/Communication, STEM, and grants for Graduate Studies. These grants cover round-trip transportation to the host country; funding to cover room, board, and incidental costs, based on the cost of living in the host country; and accident & sickness health benefits.

Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program 

The Fulbright US Student Program sponsors English Teaching Assistant Programs to graduating seniors. These students are responsible for serving as US cultural ambassadors and assisting local English teachers in classrooms abroad. These programs cover round-trip transportation to the host country; funding to cover room, board, and incidental costs, based on the cost of living in the host country; and accident & sickness health benefits.

Gates Cambridge Scholarship
This scholarship seeks to build a global network of future leaders committed to improving the lives of others. Citizen of any country outside the UK can apply to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses of study: PhD (three year research-only degree), MSc or MLitt (two year research-only degree), One year postgraduate course (e.g. MPhil, LLM, MASt, Diploma, MBA etc.). Awardees pursue a degree or degrees at the University of Cambridge, UK (see website for exceptions). The program funds the full cost of studying at Cambridge plus additional discretionary funding.

Knight Hennessy Scholars’ Program at Stanford University
This program seeks to develop a community of world leaders who collaborate and develop innovative ways to solve societal problems. Applicants can be from any academic discipline in any of Stanford’s graduate schools. This scholarship covers tuition and associated fees, provides a stipend for living and academic expenses (such as room and board, books, academic supplies, instructional materials, local transportation, and reasonable personal expenses) and a travel grant intended to cover an economy-class ticket for one annual trip to and from Stanford. Supplemental funds will be given to support academic enrichment.

Marshall Scholarship

Marshall Scholarships fund one or two years of post-graduate study at an institution in the U.K. The selectors seek students who they expect will excel as scholar-leaders and who will contribute to a stronger relationship and sense of understanding between the U.S. and the U.K. Their three main selection criteria are: academic merit, leadership potential, and ambassadorial potential.

Mitchell Scholarship
The Mitchell Scholarship provides tuition for one year of post-graduate study, accommodation, and a stipend for living expenses and travel to competitive candidates with the goal of connecting intellectual American leaders to the country of Ireland. The Mitchell Program recognizes and fosters intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to community and public service.

Rhodes Scholarship
The Rhodes Scholarships are offered to seniors for post-graduate study at the University of Oxford. Rhodes Scholars are young leaders of outstanding intellect and character who show potential to engage with global challenges, are committed to serving others, and are destined to become value-driven, principled leaders of the future.

Rotary Global Grant
The Rotary Foundation seeks to grant funding to students seeking post-graduate study at any global institution regarding at least one of its six causes: Promoting peace; Fighting disease; Providing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene; Saving mothers and children; Supporting education; and Growing local economies.

Soros Fellowships for New Americans
The Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans program offers financial support to 30 New Americans –– immigrants and children of immigrants –– pursuing graduate education. Fellows can be pursuing any field, but they have all shown the potential to contribute significantly to their field and/or to US society. The Fellowship provides up to $90,000 in funding over the course of two years.

Payne (Donald M.) International Development Graduate Fellowship 
The USAID Donald M. Payne International Development Graduate Fellowship Program seeks exemplary candidates who are interested in careers in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Fellows build skills and gain experience in issues such as poverty, hunger, injustice, disease, environmental degradation, climate change, conflict and violent extremism. The Payne Fellowship provides up to $96,000 for graduate school, intern positions, and professional development over two years. This experience concludes with an appointment to the USAID Foreign Service, with a required five years of service.

Pickering (Thomas R.) Fellowship 
A Thomas R. Pickering Fellow is offered funding for a two-years masters program, two summer internships with the US State Department, and positions in the US Foreign Service for five years after completion of the fellowship. Applicants are expected to be pursuing a two-year masters program at an American university with a focus on public policy, international affairs, public administration, business, economics, political science, sociology, or foreign languages.

Rangel (Charles B.) International Affairs Program 
The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Program selects outstanding students and prepares them for careers in the foreign service. Rangel Fellows are offered funding and resources for a two-year masters program and two summer internships. These students are expected to contribute to positive global change and complete five years of foreign service with the US State Department after completion of their post-graduate studies.

Schwarzman Scholars’ Program at Tsinghua University
This program is designed to prepare the next generation of global leaders for the challenges of the future. Applicants must be at least 18 but not yet 29 years of age as of August 1 of their Schwarzman Scholars enrollment year. Applicants pursue an innovative Master’s of Global Affairs degree program at Tsinghua University. The scholarship covers tuition fees, room and board, and travel to and from Beijing at the beginning and end of the academic year. Awardees also participate in an in-country study tour. Funding is also provided for required course books and supplies, health insurance. A stipend of $4,000 is provided for personal expenses.

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship
The National Science Foundation offers funding to outstanding seniors pursuing post-graduate study (masters and doctoral degrees) in a STEM field. The NSF's Graduate Research Fellowship Program lasts five years and provides three years of financial support –– an annual stipend of $34,000 and an allowance of $12,000 to the US accredited institution where the fellow is studying.

Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program
The Japan Exchange and Teaching Program provides American students the opportunity to live and work in Japan and teach English in Japanese schools after graduation from college. The Program works with local Japanese organizations to fund each student's travel expenses and provide a monthly salary.

Undergraduate Opportunites 

Boren Scholarship
Boren Scholarships are awarded to students of all proficiency levels who seek to enhance their skills in a wide range of critical languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese, and Swahili. Fellows from various fields can study cultures around the world that are underrepresented in traditional study abroad programs. Afterwards, Fellows are expected to commit themselves to public service and work with such organizations as the US Departments of State, Defense, and Homeland Security, and USAID.

Critical Language Scholarship 
The Critical Language Scholarship Program is offered through the U.S. State Department with the aim of educating motivated students in languages critical to the security and prosperity of the U.S. (e.g. Arabic, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Swahili, etc.). The CLS includes a summer study abroad program where students can act as American ambassadors while mastering one of these languages.

DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service)
This program seeks to internationalize German universities and promote German culture while helping developing countries to develop successful initiatives geared towards developing their own institutions. Applicants must also be interested in studying in Germany. The program is open to all fields except certain disciplines such as medicine. The scholarship amount can vary by the type of scholarship and could include the full cost of study and travel expenses.

Fulbright UK Summer Institute
The Fulbright Commission offers a summer institute in which rising sophomores and juniors can explore the UK, participate in academic study, and meet people from around the world. The Commission covers the cost of airfare, tuition and fees, and accommodation, and the program occurs at four institutions in the UK (Queen's University Belfast, Glasgow School of Art and University of Strathclyde, University of Bristol, and Aberystwyth University).

Gilman (Benjamin A.) International Scholarship 
The US State Department's Gilman Scholarship Program provides students funding to study abroad. Through these projects, recipients (who are of limited financial means) receive the opportunity to explore diverse cultures and languages and gain skills that will serve both them personally and the US as a whole.

Goldwater (Barry)Scholarship
The Goldwater Scholarship Program seeks sophomore and juniors who have the potential to become leading researchers in the natural sciences, mathematics, or engineering and who have shown commitment to this career goal. Selected students would receive up to $7,500 a year to help cover costs associated with tuition, mandatory fees, books, room and board.

NIH Summer Internship Program
Through the National Institute of Health's Summer Internship Program, individual NIH scientists select interns to work with them on biomedical research projects. The internship lasts at least eight weeks and provides a monthly stipend.

Truman Scholarship 
The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation seeks to provide funding for post-graduate study to future agents of change. The Scholarship is for students interested in public service in government, education, the nonprofit sector, or the public interest/advocacy sector. 
Rangel (Charles B.) Summer Enrichment Program 
The Rangel Summer Enrichment program allows undergraduate students to attend a six-week summer program in Washington, DC, focusing on building skills in the field of international affairs. The Program covers the costs for tuition, travel, housing, and two meals per day. It also provides a stipend of $3,200.
